Crisálida is the word in Spanish for chrysalis, the pupa state of a butterfly. This shawl is a reminiscence of what the butterfly leaves behind, a husk that looks delicate and fragile, but it still holds some of the strength it had moments ago.
This is a crescent shaped shawl, constructed from the top down, and it requires a double increase on each end of the RS and a single increase on each end of the WS. Garter rows, stockinette rows and trellis stitch are placed in different bands spread across the shawl to imitate the lines and textures found in pupas. The design is decorated with stacked increases at the bottom, which reminds me of something that’s been ripped open.
I used two different yarns: fingering weight superwash wool, used for the trellis stitch and garter rows, and mohair yarn, used for the stockinette section and stacked increases. I wanted to convey a sense of transparency by using mohair yarn, so if you want to substitute it by another fibre, try finding a similar material if you wish to obtain the same effect.
The English version of this pattern has been tech edited by Tuija Sulisalo. The English and Spanish versions have been test knitted.
Techniques used
Knit and purl, casting on and binding off, garter tab cast-on, picking up stitches, slipping stitches purlwise, knitting under loose strand, color changes, stacked increases.
Materials
Yarn
Color A: Mythica Fiber’s Sock (75% superwash fine merino/25% nylon, 437yds/400m per 3.5oz/100g, 1 skin).
Color B: Lightweight mohair blend (874yds/800m per 3.5oz/100g, 1 skein).
A note on mohair weight: lightweight is more common that fingering weight, you can use either of them as long as you obtain the same gauge.
Needles
3mm/U.S 2.5 needles for both yarns, or size needed to obtain gauge. (My knitting tension is quite loose, that’s why I usually use smaller needles than most knitters. Make sure to swatch until you find the right needles for you)
