This cowl uses a lace design technique pioneered by
Naomi Parkhurst of Gannet Designs. Similar to the
concept of “name drafts” in weaving (look it up!) and
other types of encoded knitting used for covert messages
throughout history and fiction, this technique creates
a code that assigns letters to numbers, and those numbers
to yarnovers in specific places within a chart. Though my
code can’t necessarily be deciphered (unless you are a wizard
at reading knitting), it creates a beautiful lace pattern
with a hidden, wonderful meaning: I’ve encoded into it four
words signifying stages of a plant’s life: seed, shoot, bloom,
and fruit.
