Catherine Morland Socks
The Catherine Morland Socks are the seventh in a collection of patterns named after women from Jane Austen novels. I like to design the socks with an eye to what the character might like to knit. Catherine has a big imagination and LOVES fantasy. I could imagine her knitting this pattern, which is simple and easy to memorize, and which would showcase the most outrageous yarn choices perfectly!
These socks are worked from the cuff down. They are written for magic-loop knitting and include a heel flap and gusset, but feel free to substitute your own style of knitting and preferred heel method. The back of the leg and bottom of the foot are in plain stockinette, while the leg is patterned all the way around and the pattern continues down the foot.
The texture pattern (both written and charted) is quite simple and looks nice in a variety of yarns - solid, tonal, self-striping, space-dyed, speckled, hand-painted, or as crazy as you want to get. It can be fun to use scraps for heels and toes or even to create your own stripes! Use your imagination and have a ton of fun with this pattern.
There are three sizes in this pattern: Small (56 sts), Medium (64 sts), and Large (72 sts). This should give you some room to play a bit - if you want to use a sportweight yarn, for instance, but have a medium-sized foot, you could try knitting the smaller size. (Or hold a strand of mohair with your yarn and knit a size down!)
