This is a pattern from 1935 in which strips of hairpin lace made two balls of yarn on a large hook are attached at the centre of previous strips, giving a feathered appearance. After the cape is constructed the edges of the hairpin strips are crocheted in a contrasting colour.

You need a hairpin loom of 5 inches and half a yard of velvet ribbon to finish the cape.

The gauge is quite uncertain. The pattern instructs you to make the first hairpin strip 15 inches long and since hairpin lace is quite stretchy it is probably best to take the gauge from the initial strip of crochet down the first side. One could make extra and then ravel down to 15 inches on the first side, then use that as a gauge for further strips.
