By the Campfire
The By the Campfire Cardigan is designed to be an oversized, cosy cardigan that can be wrapped around you in colder months. It features sections of eye-catching stranded colourwork through the length of the body and utilises an unusual construction, allowing for stranded knitting to be worked in the round vertically, rather than horizontally. With its draped, flattering shape, it’s a great way to keep warm without sacrificing style.
Sizing Guide
Instructions are given for sizes XS-S (M-L: XL-2XL: 3XL-4XL). The key measurement to consider when choosing the best size for you is the Elbow to Elbow measurement.
Elbow to Elbow = 34.5” (36”: 37.5”: 39”)
Total length = 25” (27”: 28”: 28”)
Armhole Depth = 10” (11”: 12.5”: 12.5”)
Construction
The main body of the cardigan is worked in two halves, starting from the elbow / armhole and working in the round towards the middle of the body. This allows stranded colourwork to run vertically, rather than horizontally, through the design. Once the body is completed, stitches are picked up around the armhole and the sleeves are knitted in the round to the cuff. To open the garment’s waist and complete construction, the waistband seam is steeked and cut, with stitches picked up around the edge of the steek to form a ribbed waistband.
Yarn & Yardage
It is essential that you use a yarn suitable for steeking for this design – ideally, a 100% pure wool yarn and non superwash. The sample here was worked up with Fuzzzy Green Fibres’ beautiful BFL DK weight base – a stunningly soft and luxurious yarn – in the colours Pitch, Pewter and Patronus.
Main Colour 1 (Pitch) = 461 (491: 519: 520) metres / 205 (218: 231: 231) grams.
Main Colour 2 (Pewter) = 426 (448: 512: 512) metres / 190 (200: 228: 228) grams.
Main Colour 3 (Patronus) = 333 (359: 384: 384) metres / 148 (160: 171: 171) grams.
Gauge
On 4.5mm / US Size 7 needles, 19 sts over 25 rnds worked in stockinette in the round creates a 4x4” square.
