Brown Bear Brown Bear Sweater
Brown bears lumber through the forest on this cute stranded knitting pullover. The sweater is worked in the round from the bottom up to the underarms, sleeves are worked separately and attached, and then the raglan yoke is worked in the round as one piece. Contrasting ribbed hem, cuffs, and neck won’t show stains as easily. While the stranded knitting design calls for up to four colors at once, the sweater construction is simple. A second version of the chart is included with only two colors per row, for those who choose to use duplicate stitch to add extra colors after knitting is complete.
The pattern includes five sizes to fit children 6-12 months (2 years, 4 years, 6-8 years, 10 years).
The gauge is 18 sts and 25 rows over 4” (10cm) in St st on smaller size needle, blocked; 18 sts and 22 rows over 4” (10cm) in stranded St st on larger size needles, blocked.
This is an intermediate level pattern. Knitters should have experience with stranded knitting technique, long carries, and following color charts. Knitters will also use short rows (wrap and turn) and Kitchener Stitch technique. Since the bear motif in this pattern call for up to four colors in a round, some knitters may opt to use the duplicate stitch technique.
The recommended yarn for this pattern is Plymouth Encore (75% Acrylic, 25% Wool; 200 yards/100g). You will need 1 (2, 2, 2, 3) balls of MC (Winter White #146), and 1 ball each of C1 (Latte Heather #6006), C2 (Forest Green #204), C3 (Deep Brown #599), and C4 (Black #217).
You can substitute any heavy worsted/Aran weight yarn for this pattern.
You will also need 24” or 32” (60 or 80 cm) circular needles and DPNs in size US 7 (4.5 mm), or size to obtain gauge, and 24” or 32” (60 or 80 cm) circular needles in size US 6 (4.0 mm), or one size smaller than size to obtain gauge.
This pattern includes a schematic, full color chart, a two-color chart for optional duplicate stitch, written instructions, and notes on short rows and Kitchener Stitch technique.
