Brioche Ambitions : A half-circle shawl perfect for ambitious beginners wanting to take their brioche knitting to the next level, featuring one and two-color brioche with a striking geometric border.
When we first started this collaboration, I asked Ross from Twisted Ambitions Yarn what his favorite shawl shape is. Naturally he said half-circle shape! Since this shawl was originally designed to be the shawl for Knit ATX during the Best Little Yarn Crawl in Texas 2025, I wanted to design something perfect for beginners. Maybe someone who has never tried brioche before, who is ambitious enough to learn with this pattern. As you work your way through the shawl, you will learn a lot of techniques, from one-color brioche (which I call the “garter stitch” of brioche because you’re always brioche knitting when working it flat), to two-color brioche. Lots of increases will be worked before you get to the exciting geometric border. By the time you reach the border, you will (hopefully) be ready to work the increases and decreases there!
Yarn Notes:
Grab 3 skeins of fingering / sock weight yarn in 3 different tones and hues: light, medium and dark. I chose 3 colors that are very different from each other, in completely different hues, but feel free to choose a lovely gradient as well! This could be 3 hues in different tones, which could be very nice. In order to see if your colors will have enough contrast, take a black and white photo to see the difference in tone. These gorgeous colors by Twisted Ambitions were inspired from my logo and colors I’m naturally drawn to.
See last photo of my yarn in skein form.
This pattern has both written instructions for all sections, as well as charts for the final border. I recommend following the charts for the best knitting experience (border only).
Skill Level:
Beginner Brioche - Intermediate. This is a fantastic pattern if you want to learn brioche knitting AND brioche increases and decreases! If you’re feeling unsure, I have an online course on my website, knitgraffiti.com!

Construction Notes:
For the construction of the shawl, the Pi shawl shaping technique, a la Elizabeth Zimmerman, which begins with very few stitches, doubles the stitch count at larger and larger intervals (i.e.: after 3 rows, then 6 rows, then 12 rows, etc.) to achieve its overall half-circle shape. You will create beautiful stripes using all of your colors throughout, seeing all the different combinations. You will end with an Elastic Bind Off that is a perfect way to end this shawl adventure, creating a stretchy edge so you can accentuate the scalloped border.
I love gigantic half-circle shawls, they are so easy to wear! I love wearing mine draped over my shoulders with the bulk of the shawl around my back. You can also wrap it around your neck and shoulders for a daring accessory!
