I’ve always been more of a night owl, and I prefer cooler temperatures so my favorite thing about summer is being able to stay outside past the sunset. Bonfires on the beach, laying out under the stars, and watching the moonlight sparkle on the waves as they crash into the shore. The Blooming Moon Bandana, named for one of the June full moon monikers, is perfect for tossing in your bag during the day and wrapping around your neck at night when the air gets a bit cooler.

The bandana starts with a long garter tab to create a central column of stitches for the center spine. Increases are worked at the edges and either side of the center spine to create a triangular shape. The center spine is worked in seven charted sections separated by eyelet ridges, with each section depicting a different moon phase. Two yarns of different colors are held together to work one side of the bandana. The two yarns are then separated and worked individually to create the stranded colorwork motif in each section of the center spine. The two yarns are held together again to work the other side. Additional eyelet ridges at the border and optional tassels finish off the bandana.

Because the same size needles are used to knit the yarn both double-stranded and then separately for the colorwork, the colorwork gauge will be a bit loose pre-blocking. A non-superwash wool or wool blend yarn is recommended for this bandana to ensure that the yarn blooms to fill out the colorwork of the central column of stitches.

This design is part of The Sun and Fog Summer 2021 collection.
