What to do with a single colorful skein of cashmere blend yarn? Make a shawl of course!

For years I hoarded this yarn like Gollum with the One Ring. It was too precious. I didn’t feel like I was good enough. I didn’t think crochet was good enough for this yarn. Well, that was stupid. That is a messed up mindset.

The truth is that there will always be more yarns. I am enough to use this yarn and crochet is good enough for fancy yarns too. Thus, the Bismuth Shawl was born. I wanted to create a pattern that showed off the colors and best of all, use up every bit of the yarn. Heck yeah, I want to use up every bit of this yarn. Sure, the yarn isn’t TOO precious to use, but I’m not fool - I don’t want to waste even an ounce.

Skill Level: Easy
Finished Measurements: About 52” wingspan and 29” deep (blocked)

MATERIALS:
Yarn: Dream in Color Classy Worsted (100% Superwash Merino Wool; 340 yards 311 meters: October Dream Club 2014 – 1 skein)
Hook: US 10/J (6.0 mm)
Extras: Yarn needle, (optional) scale t0 weigh yarn before starting.
Gauge: 12 sts and 7 rows = 4” (10 cm) in Hdc
NOTE: Gauge is not crucial for this project. Use a hook 2-3 sizes larger than recommended for yarn weight.

PATTERN NOTES
The shawl is worked sideways, increasing 1 st every row on one edge.

The pattern is customizable. Use any weight or quantity of yarn. If your yarn is different than that used for this sample, weigh your yarn before starting, work shawl Body until 15-20% of your yarn remain, then work edging. For a wider lace edge, work Body until a larger amount of yarn remain for the edge. For this sample, I worked until there were 66 sts before starting the edging.
