Berry picking is a national pastime in Finland, and in the autumn, thousands of Finns pack their bags and head for the woods. No one owns the wild berries, so they’re free for anyone to pick. And oh, they pick. Bags, buckets and baskets are filled to the brim with berries - some to be eaten fresh, most to be deep-frozen or preserved.

The downside of it all is that each year, a number of less experienced rangers loose their way in the woods, with ensuing search parties. Sound advice for anyone looking to spend the weekend in the woods: don’t wander off alone, and wear a colorful hat, that will keep you visible as well as warm.
