The stitch panel pattern for the Berlin Gansey was discovered in a photograph of a flapper, taken in Berlin Germany in 1924.

The look has been updated to a modern silhouette with set in sleeves, gentle waist shaping, wide deep sleeve cuffs and an exaggerated turtleneck.

Handspun 2 ply yarns or the small mill, mule spun yarns that are increasingly available at Sheep and Wool festivals (and maybe even your LYS) are perfect for this project.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Chest: 34 37, 40, 44, 47 inches. (Sample measures 37” and is worn with about 2” of ease). Requires 1100 1200, 1350, 1450, 1550 yards light worsted weight yarn. All yardage estimates are approximate and individual mileage may very.

Note: the mule spun Zeilinger CO yarn used in the sample is described as a sport weight, however it knits up as light worsted. Berrocco Ultra Alpaca is recommended as the closest commercially available equivalent.

The body and sleeves are knit in the round to the underarm, then knitted flat through the shoulder and sleeve cap shaping. The shoulders are joined with a three needle BO. The turtleneck collar is picked up and knitted for a very very long time.
