Aurora borealis is a simple shawl with a captivating construction and astonishing final result.
The shawl is built with a modular technique, working one section at time from side to side; it is enriched by short rows sections in contrasting color for a major emphasis on yarn color variety.

The pattern calls for a self-striping yarn with long color changes for an optimal result; nevertheless, you can also use two solid colors as main and contrasting color for short rows sections.

The original version (green-purple in the sample) involves inserted short rows sections only in half of the shawl, being the rest of it simply worked in garter st. The modified version (included in the pattern instructions) allows you to add inserted short rows sections in the whole shawl, to emphasise the yarn color palette.
Edges are refined with crocheted crab stitch.

Gauge: gauge is not crucial; different gauge will only affect the dimension of the FO.
The sample was worked at gauge of 19.5 sts x 40 rows= 10 cm/ 4” in garter stitch with 3.5 mm (US 4) needles.

Finished measures: approx 82 x 82 cm /24” x 24”.

Materials
-Yarn for the sample: fingering or sport yarn. Quantity required: approx 700 m/775 yds (original version: MC 600 m/650 yds and CC 100 m/110 yds; modified version: 500 m/ 550 yds for MC and 200 m / 220 yds for CC). Yarn used for the sample: Drops Delight color 14 (green-purple) and 16 (green-blue). Optimal color effect will be obtained with a self striping yarn with long color changes, used both for MC and CC alternating balls.
