Light and airy, and at the same time warm and soft, this shawl hugs you just like gentle April wind. Its generous size combined with the light weight make it a great companion for that fickle in between seasons weather.
This pattern was designed to highlight the beauty of combining kid mohair with variegated fingering weight yarn. The alternating stripe patterns are easy to memorize and very satisfying to knit. Pick any two colors and see the pattern do its magic. April Wind will just fly off your needles ♡
Size
- Wingspan 81”/205cm + tassels
- Depth 25”/64cm
- Depending on the gauge and available yardage, your project may differ in size
Yarn
- Color A: 450yds / 410m of fingering weight yarn
- Color B: 450yds / 410m of lace weight mohair yarn
- Any combination of mohair + fingering or fingering + fingering yarn will work fine. The pattern is easy to modify for another yardage
- Sample shawl: Color A - Hula Hut Yarns Lotus Sock (80% superwash merino, 20% nylon, 3.5oz/100g, 440yds/402m) in color Unicorn Freckles Color B - Buxom Cat Knits Fluff Lace (68% kid mohair, 32% silk, 1.75oz/50g, 450yds/411m) in color Blush
Needles and Gauge
- US8 / 5mm needles or the size needed to obtain gauge of 19sts and 35 rows in 4” / 10cm in Garter Stitch
- For any other yarn: use needles at least three sizes up from stated on the label to keep fabric airy and light
- Neither gauge nor yardage is critical for this project, as the number of section repeats can be easily adjusted
Construction and Pattern Details
- The shawl is knit from the corner in the shape of a skewed triangle.
- Neither gauge nor yardage is critical for this project, as the number of section repeats can be easily adjusted. This way, you can use all the yarn from a skein without leftovers and waste.
- If you’d like to get size and drape similar to a sample, make sure to check your gauge specifically on a blocked swatch.
- Tassels can be added for an extra touch of boho and to make corners look more polished. Photo tutorial is provided.
