Anne Elliot's Fichu
“Fichu, part of a woman’s under-clothing. It is a square or rectangular piece of muslin, or of another white or coloured cloth, or even silk, which is folded in two at the angles and covers the neck. The point of the fichu falls in the middle of the back and covers the shoulders; the extremi- ties are crossed in front and cover the chest; but with white skin, curves, firm flesh and a bosom, even the most inno- cent peasant woman knows how to let just enough show by arranging the folds of her fichu.” —Denis Diderot (1756)
Anne Elliot is one of my favorite Jane Austen characters; she’s already lived life and learned from it. I chose a fichu because as a spinster she would have probably worn one for modesty, but a fichu can still be flirtatious, which shows the hope Anne carries with her when Captain Wentworth returns.
The construction of this shawl starts flat and then stitches are picked up from the center square and the rest of the shawl is worked in the round.
