Ancestors Skirt
Knitted skirts are a joy to wear and this one is so simple to knit. The Ancestors Skirt features an intuitive cable pattern over a 2 x 2 rib on circular needles.
It has lovely provenance since it was created thanks to a dearheart requesting a knitted skirt via my Inner Wild Etsy Shop.
It evolved from Inner Wild Ancestors Mitts, Ancestors Apron and Ancestors Bodice, all of which feature the same relaxing-to-knit cable stitch.
This pattern details exactly how it was made so you can make your own.
Worked on 4.5 mm / (US 7), 4mm (US 6) and 3.5 mm (US 4) circular needles and using any DK yarn Ancestors Skirt is One Size with the flexibility of modifying length and width.
The original Ancestors Skirt pictured was knitted using Drops Karisma DK pure wool yarn, 7 x 50g balls {around 700 m / 707 yrds}.
Make your Ancestors Skirt longer or shorter by simply adding or subtracting whole pattern repeats. Change the waistband to a 2 x 2 rib for a different look and more stretch. Make the waistband longer or shorter.
You can also use this pattern to knit your Ancestors Skirt in a Sport weight yarn with as little as two 100g skeins of yarn total. This turns out about 3” shorter than when using DK yarn. For a similar length to the Ancestors Skirt photographed here in Drops Karisma DK you would want to add at least one full pattern repeat.
Knit any size
You can knit any size using any yarn and needle size using the ‘Magic Cast On Stitch Counts’ panel. It gives you sizes XXS - XXXL plus the maths formula for sizes outside of those.
You’re free to create not just any size of Ancestors Skirt in any gauge you like but also use it to make bags, hats, cowls and anything else in the round and have the flowing cables match up perfectly! Joy!
I hope knitting and wearing your own Ancestors Skirt makes your heart sing. Thank you.
