Amir al-bahr
Silk Road
Though sand we’ve crossed and mountains high,
brought silks, exotics spice’ and Dyes,
Seen cities fabled, buildings tall,
impossible to describe in all
the ordinary words we know,
But still we journey, on we go.
Up by the wheel our captain stands
Who over men and waves commands
The sails are up, the wind is brisk,
We hope to skip long days a bit
The waters here are wild but warm
sighed prayers rise ‘keep us from harm’.

Amir al-bahr, an arabic term meaning ‘commander
of the sea’, is thought to be the origin of a title
familiar to all, Admiral.
This shawl-scarf hybrid was inspired by the rigging
on sail ships, that travellers on some parts of their
perilous journey could take, to trade parts of the
tedious overland trek and it’s dangers for a different
set of risks.
The garter stitch based design is worked in 3 sections,
first the 2 wings; then the central part is knit
on, using up the set aside stitches from the wings,
while slipped stitches create a design reminiscing of
rigging on a ship.
