Almost Never is a celebration of delicious fabric, playing with colors, and teeny tiny needles. I was in my friend Esther’s car heading home from our local yarn shop when I designed this pattern. It is so shockingly easy, suitable for literally any level
knitter! It’s called Almost Never because you almost never run out of yarn. Use your small scraps, leftovers, remnants, advents, minis,
micros, etc. Create a piece that reminds you of previous makes, that shows off your favorite dyers or favorite colors, or finally use
those special mini sets.
This simple yet striking, squishy, scrappy cowl was designed to use up fingering weight leftovers and mini and/or micro skeins. The magic happens thanks to a fine gauge and a combination of knits and purls. Worked from the bottom up, Almost Never is a great palette cleanser, a perfect travel, social, or zoom project, and a fun way to explore color combinations.
Your MC is your background color and your CC is your foreground color. Pay attention to which color you’re using for each round!
I suggest choosing tonal or solid colorways with a similar twist and high contrast between MC and CC. Use as few as 2 colors or as many as 14 (like I did in my Large sample at the bottom of this page). I used 7 minis for the Small sample (aqua and blue, cover photo), including just one 20g/80yd mini for the same MC throughout, and only one 20g/80yd mini for both top and bottom ribbing.
Need help determining contrast? Line up your yarns and take a black and white photo. If they all look similar they’re low contrast, if there are dramatic differences they’re high contrast.
You start to lose the texture when you go up needle sizes, so unless you’re a super duper tight knitter, I highly suggest using the recommended needles to achieve similar fabric to the samples. If you’re a super loose knitter, gasp, go down a needle size.
If you tend to cast on or bind off tightly, use your larger needle for these steps.
