The Adélie hat is one of 11 engaging patterns from Penguin: a Knit Collection by Anna Maltz - a printed book packed with patterns, photographs, illustrations and stories, all inspired by penguins. Available from annamaltz.com and your LYS.

Knitted in the round, the shaping of this hat is based on old-fashioned baby bonnets, but without the forehead peak or back seam. It frames the face beautifully, and the subtle earflaps give it a practical edge, keeping your ears warm and making it perfect for wearing under a bike helmet. Knitted all in black, it has something of a Louise Brooks bob about it. Instructions are given for both the plain and striped version in three adult sizes. Markers are placed at regular intervals to help you keep track of what you are doing and instructions are given row-by-row.
