> Urchin Sock Yarn Bag.

Urchin Sock Yarn Bag.
Knit another sock yarn string bag! It’s all in the details with this one: it features sea-urchin-style pentaradial shaping and a thick, comfortable handle. It’s a small bag when empty, but should stretch to carry ten 50g skeins of sock yarn, a loaf of bread (maybe two),, or other smallish things.
Dropped stitches and eyelets make the open string-bag fabric even more open; a neat drawstring cinches up the top for a nice look.
You can knit this in vibrant sock yarn for the look shown, or use muted colors for a softer aesthetic.
Materials:
- 310-350yds of Regia 4-ply Color or similar sock yarn
- 1 16” circular needle in US8/5.0mm, or size needed for body gauge
- 1 set DPNs in US8/5.0mm
- 1 set of DPNs in US4/3.75mm, or size needed for strap gauge
- scrap yarn for provisional crochet cast-on
- crochet hook, size B/2.25mm or size suited to yarn, for provisional cast-on
- tapestry needle for weaving in ends
- removable stitch markers
Gauge:
Gauge for the handle strap, worked with smaller needles, is 8 sts and 9 rounds over 1”/2.54cm of stockinette worked in the round and lightly blocked.
Gauge for the body, with larger needles, is 22 sts and 24 rounds over 4”/10cm of stockinette worked in the round and blocked.
Be sure to check your gauge—the body fabric needs to be pretty airy for the string bag concept to work.
