This Good Earth is a worsted weight square shawl/lapghan worked from the center out, beginning with a circular cast on. It is worked in four triangular segments with an increase band of 3 stitches between each segment. The work begins with a pattern of twining cables like vines, interspersed with leaves, that fruits into a ring of acorn-like motifs; the earth as the fertile source of life. The final lace border represents the word “rune,” which calls to mind the agelessness of stories told by carving into the rocky bones of the earth itself.

Materials Needed:

  • 4-5 skeins (sample used @890 yards; skeins used were generous) Cascade Yarns® Alpaca Lana D’Oro
  • 4.5mm (US 7) circular needles or size needle needed for gauge
  • moveable stitch marker to mark start of round
  • cable needle

Optional Materials:

  • double pointed needles in same size as circular needles
  • crochet hook if preferred for magic circle cast on
  • additional removable stitch markers to mark between sections
  • regular stitch markers to mark motif repeats in each section

Gauge:
1 unblocked acorn motif = @2.25 inches square unblocked (swatch chart for acorn motif provided). Yardage recommended does not include this swatch.

Size:
38” (96.5cm) square after blocking

The motifs used in this pattern come from the Japanese Knitting Stitch Bible translated by Gayle Roehm, and from the work of Naomi Parkhurst. Transitions between motifs created by Raven Knits Design.
