Savage Heart Cardigan
A Grown Ladies version of the Cockleshell Cardigan from the Mason Dixon Knitting Field Guide No 6. The Savage Heart Cardigan has the same simple construction as the baby sweater reimagined with new shaping so that it will hang just so from the shoulders and knitted at a relaxed gauge for extra cozy drape creating a relaxed fitting cocoon of a cardigan.
The orignal baby sweater was knit in Nutmeg Fibers Hearth, a bulky weight yarn, beautiful but not as practical as I’d like. Nutmeg Fibers also makes a beautiful worsted, Cottage available in the same beautiful naturally dyed shades as the Hearth. Or do what I did and choose a yarn to celebrate some small fiber producer near you- the name Savage Heart comes from a local-to-me farm where this beautiful undyed shade of silver grey cormo wool I used to knit my cardigan is from.
The Savage Heart Cardigan is worked in 2 halves, sideways from sleeve cuff to center back. The center back is joined with a 3-Needle bind off. An applied I-cord edging is worked across the hem. The fit of this cardigan is intended to be very relaxed, choose a size 6-12” larger then your actual chest measurement. Though this is intended to be worn open at the front buttons and options for button loops.
there is a note on the schematic page that includes instructions for adding length to the body.
Finished measurements: 42, 47, 53, 58, 63, 69” around chest
