Sometimes when sleep wouldn’t visit, she would ease softly out of her bed and pad barefooted over to the window. Throwing back the sash, she’d reach her arms outside and breathe in the fern rich breeze. Moonlight shimmered between the rich velvet folds of night. It felt gentle on her arms- cool, silverysilt beams brushing lightly against her skin like the wings of a moth. The steady, quiet light reassured her. It was a loyal friend that had made a lock-diary promise. It was always up there somewhere. Tonight it was full. The penilune. Brilliant, cool light glimmered, illuminating small clouds in the sky and setting them amongst the stars with their own ethereal glow. It embraced the sun’s light and shared it generously, spilling it down onto the midnight earth over owls and foxes and hares. Luna moths basked while small shelled snails journeyed over rich moss carpets. Nighttime transformed, magical beneath those clouds, that light- twinkling, ever moving stars in the peaceful night still. Something miraculous was held in that light. Perhaps it always was.
