The word Mokum, or place’, is Amsterdam’s version of New York’s Big Apple a nickname indistinguishable from the city it romanticizes. Matt Lebovic.

Named after the city’s nickname, Mokum, a Yiddish word that means place or safe haven, these socks are inspired by everyday life in Amsterdam. The rhythmic geometric motifs are pulled from patterns found around the city from the canals to the lively walls of Amsterdam Centraal. You don’t even need to leave your bike to catch a glimpse of the striking lines marking the speed bumps along your way. The Mokum Socks are designed to keep your feet and ankles warm, blocking out the unforgiving wind on that chilly bike ride home with their plushy stranded
colorwork fabric.

This pattern is a variation on my earlier pattern Mokum Cowl (part of Urth Yarns Knitters of the
World project).

SIZES

Four sizes: 1 (2, 3, 4)

Intended to fit children and adults with US shoe sizes from children 10 through adult male 10 or EUR shoe sizes 27-44.

CONSTRUCTION

Main feature of Mokum Socks is a striking geometric colorwork print on the top of the Leg.

The socks can be knit either toe-up, or cuff-down depending on your personal preference. Both options written out in this pattern.

The Foot is worked fully in stockinette. Both Leg and Foot length can be easily adjusted with fewer or extra rows of stockinette. German Short Row Heel is worked over 60% of the stitches. Half-twisted rib Cuff keeps the socks from sliding down, while giving them a tidier look, additionally highlighted with a thin CC strip at the very top.
