This is a (second) very special pattern that I designed to celebrate the arrival of our new baby Maverick Mercury Danger in March 2014. When I had my first son Presley back in 2011, I made him his very own monster to celebrate his arrival, so when I found out I was pregnant again I got hard to work designing another monster that I would be proud to name after newest member of the Danger clan, and this is what I came up with!

Both the Presley and Maverick monsters are designed to be baby friendly: they’ve got knitted teeth as opposed to my normal felt teeth, embroidered eyes that can’t be chewed off, and one long arm making them perfect for little hands to grab and carry around, or to even use with one of those toy leashes and keep in a stroller or high chair (and perfect for adults to hang anywhere). This time around I knew I wanted the Maverick Monster to have similarities to his brother the Presley monster, so these guys have similar characteristics, but each is their own unique monster (just like my boys!).

Skill Level: Intermediate if knit separately and sewn together, or Experienced if knit all in one piece (I would recommend this pattern for beginning knitters that are comfortable knitting in the round or who want a bit of a challenge. I have rated it “intermediate” because according to the Craft Council skill level guidelines, anything knitted in the round is intermediate.)

Skills used: Basic knit and purl stitches, increases, decreases, knitting in the round, picking up stitches, Kitchener Stitch, and basic sewing skills.

Pattern Format: Instant download Adobe .pdf file

Yarn: 110-160 yards of yarn in your main color, and 100-150 yards of yarn in your contrast color.

Gauge: You pick! Simply knit with your choice of yarn on needles 2-3 sizes smaller than called for to get a tight knit fabric your stuffing wont show through,

Needles: You pick! A 40” or longer circular needle in the size right for your yarn and one additional circular needle, any length, in the same size as your main needle (for attaching the second end of the arm with Kitchener Stitch). See the pattern for more info.

Notions: Scissors, tapestry needle, scrap yarn for eyes (or safety eyes or buttons), stuffing, 13 removable stitch markers, or 12 removable markers and one not removable (to mark beginning of rnd), row counter (optional, but very helpful).

Three sample monsters with material lists to create them are included in this pattern. Sample monsters range in size from 15” tall to 26” tall and are knit using Sock, DK, and Worsted Weight yarns. This range will help you determine the finished size of your monster based on what weight yarn you are using.
