The word manis in Bahasa Indonesia and Bahasa Melayu (in Indonesian and Malay), means sweet or adorable. In Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia, the word is associated with sweet desserts, confectionery, and a sweet and fragrant mango called Harum Manis. To me, it is a familiar word, associated with Dona Manis, a nostalgic little cake shop, popular among those who say that its banana tarts are the best in Singapore.

Wear Manis as a happy, fluffy topping to sweeten your outfit and feel its comfort giving your shoulders a light, soft hug. Knitted in the round from the bottom with a wavy hemline created by a nostalgic chevron lace pattern in fingering weight yarn, the rest of the pullover is understated and knitted with a single strand of lace weight silk-mohair yarn with a needle that goes up in sizes towards the shoulders. The result is a wonderful gradation of translucency and airiness in the fabric. The number of stitches to work also decreases towards the top, making the end of knitting come sooner than you know, which is great if you can’t wait to try on your pullover. But before you do, you will join the shoulders with no-sew Russian grafting using just a crochet hook, then work 2 rounds of finishing for each armhole. That’s it! Russian grafting gives you the perfect tension at joins, even for a yarn as fine and tricky as silk mohair one. It gives structure to the pullover at the shoulders with no puckering.

Have fun pairing colours. Perhaps you can find enough yarn in your stash, or will want to take the opportunity to get that fun looking skein you have been longing to try. For most sizes, one skein (or a leftover amount) of each yarn is enough to make your sweet little top.
