Love Your Leftovers Fingerless Gloves
Once you have knit a few pairs of socks you will inevitably end up with some leftover sock yarn. Often the colorway has been discontinued by the time you actually get round to knitting with it (!) so how can you use it up? If you have enough for contrasting cuffs, heels, and toes on another pair that’s one option, but what can you do with just a few metres? These fingerless gloves are designed specifically to help! Of course, you don’t have to make them from leftovers, they are perfect for mini skeins, or you could even treat yourself to new yarn!
Method: These stranded colorwork fingerless gloves are knit in the round from the cuff down. They have an afterthought thumb can be worked in two or more contrasting colors (pair shown uses four colors).
There are links included to tutorials on afterthought thumbs.
These fingerless gloves can be knitted on dpns, by magic loop, or on a short circular (in which case you will still need dpns for the fingers and thumbs).
Please note the colorwork design in this pattern is charted not written out. You need to be prepared to read and work from charts in order to enjoy knitting this design.
Size: Hand circumference 7.5” (19cm) when worked at gauge given in the pattern.
Although these gloves are written for one size this is adjustable to a certain degree. There are instructions for how to do this included in the pattern.
Yarn: You can use any 4 ply (fingering) yarn that you like and with which you can get tension/ gauge. Please note I do not recommend using yarns with a high cotton content as cotton doesn’t stretch as much as other fibers and this will affect the fit of your gloves.
This pattern was designed for you to experiment with contrasting colors! Be creative, have fun, but keep in mind changes will affect yardage and number of ends to weave in. The amounts of each color required will depend on how many colors you pick and where you choose to use them in the glove. As a guide:
MC – approx. 140 metres (153 yards)
CC – totalling approx. 58 metres (64 yards)
