Katarina Hat
This is the perfect project to learn and get comfortable with Brioche knitting! Once you are confident with creating Brioche fabric on the hat body, you’ll learn how to work a Brioche decrease for the crown, and then you’ll have a stylish hat to wear! The squishy, stretchy fabric works well for a one-size-fits-most hat, which can have a folded brim or not. If the brim folds up, the side with the contrasting color will show on the brim, adding interest to the hat!
Working two-color Brioche in the round is a great way to learn, since it’s just the same two rounds repeated, one round with one color, then one round with the other color. One color will work all the knit stitches of the rib, and slip the purl stitches; the other color will work all the purl stitches and slip the knit stitches. Slips are worked with yarn-overs going around them, creating the squishy Brioche ribbed fabric.
This hat was designed for two yarns: the front-facing yarn being a pop of color in a yarn that’s not quite next-to-skinsoft, and the inside-facing yarn, which will hug your head, is a super-soft yarn. If you have alpaca sensitivity, choose a yarn without alpaca content as the CC yarn, which will touch your skin the most.
This is the sister hat to the Bianca Hat, which will teach two-color Brioche Rib worked flat, and how to work short rows with Brioche. This one is a bit easier so it’s a great one to make first!
