Knit up this Christmas Cake topped with a display of Santa’s living room, and use some glittery yarns too for a festive sparkly touch. Each of the top decorations are stuffed toys, so you can use these to make a diorama display without the cake base, hang them on your tree, or use them to top an edible cake. My cake covers a polystyrene cake dummy so it has a smooth and flat surface to decorate. If you cannot find a cake dummy you could cut cardboard or plastic mesh pieces the same size as the cake, place these inside the walls of the cake, and stuff with filling instead.

Designed by Amanda Berry @fluffandfuzz, this cake is knitted in acrylic DK yarns. The cake cover is knit in the round using DPNs or a circular needle for Magic Loop. The decorations are worked flat on single pointed needles (not in the round). The icing and fire surround are i-cord tubes which can be worked on two DPNs or a circular needle.

NEEDLES
A pair of 3.25mm single pointed knitting needles, plus 3.25mm DPNs or circular needle (US 3).

RECOMMENDED YARN
Use DK yarns throughout (double knitting/light worsted weight). For the metallic yarns, King Cole Glitz DK; 97% acrylic/3% polyester; one 100g/290m skein each of White and Gold metallic. For the other colours for the decorations, King Cole Big Value DK; 100% acrylic; one 50g/145m skein in each shade.

NOTIONS
Tapestry needle, toy filling, a 15cm diameter x 10cm tall polystyrene cake dummy, stitch marker, plus embroidery thread, pompoms and cocktail sticks for the finishing details.

SIZES
One size only - The cake dummy measures 15cm diameter, 49cm circumference, and 10cm tall. The finished cake with decorations has a total height of 30cm.

TECHNIQUES
For confident beginners and above, other techniques used include casting on and off, knits, purls, increases and decreases, short rows, and seaming to finish.
