Water Lily, a traditional Estonian lace motif, has always reminded me of my all-time favorite spring flowers, the stunning and intriguing Iris. Iridea, meaning Iris, is my classic bottom-up crescent design, worked from the bottom in one piece starting with the lace floral motifs along the edge. The shawl is shaped into crescent with easy stockinette short rows (no wraps). The lace includes beads for texture and two beading options are charted, but the design will work without beads as well.

There are two interchangeable lace charts and four shawl sizes to choose from: XL using chart A, Large using chart B, Medium using chart A, and Small using chart B. To further customize the size, simply cast on a different number of repeats for either of the two lace charts - chart A (110 rows) requires approx 38 yards per pattern repeat, chart B (66 rows) approx 28.5 yards. So choose your options and join me in creating a bouquet of beautiful spring flowers that can be enjoyed all year long.

Finished Measurements:
XL (chart A): 34.5” (center depth) x 82” (wingspan)
Large (chart B): approx 24.5” (center depth) x 76” (wingspan)
Medium (chart A): approx 30” (center depth) x 64” (wingspan)
Small (chart B): 19.5” (center depth) x 56” (wingspan)
Note: Measurements taken after blocking.

Yarn (solid or tonal colors):
XL (chart A): Any lace or light fingering weight yarn, approx 945 - 995 yards; the XL lace sample was completed with 945 yards of Dream in Color Wisp (50% Merino, 50% Silk; 550 yards / 56 grams); color: Rosy
Large (chart B): Any lace or fingering weight yarn, approx 715 – 765 yards
Medium (chart A): Any lace or fingering weight yarn, approx 575 – 625 yards
Small (chart B): Any lace, fingering or sport weight yarn, approx 425 - 475 yards; the Small fingering sample was completed with 425 yards of Bobbie Sox Yarns Fingering (70% Merino, 30% Silk; 440 yards / 100 grams); color: Lemon Grass

Gauge:
Lace weight: 20 sts / 26 rows = 4” / 10 cm in stockinette, unblocked, using US 8 / 5.00 mm needles
Fingering weight: 18 sts / 24 rows = 4” / 10 cm in stockinette, unblocked, using US 8 / 5.00 mm needles
Note: Correct gauge is not critical for this project, but your final measurements and yardage requirements may vary if your gauge is different.

Beads ‘lots of beads’ / ‘fewer beads’ (optional):
XL (chart A): 682 / 214; Medium (chart A): 422 / 134
Large (chart B): 394 / 134; Small (chart B): 244 / 84
Note: These are exact numbers, purchasing a few extra beads is recommended.

Bead Size:
Bead size depends on the weight of your yarn and which beading option you choose. For example, a large lace weight shawl with ‘lots of beads’ would probably work best with 8/0 3.00mm beads to avoid straining the yarn too much, but the same large size done in fingering weight could easily support 6/0 4.00mm beads.

Notions:
Crochet hook size 0.75mm or 0.60mm (small enough to fit through holes of beads, optional)
Stitch markers
Yarn needle
Blocking pins
