Ravens and crows are found on every continent, so it comes as no surprise that they found their way into legends of many cultures. They are often cast as a mediator between life and death because of their somber color and mournful sounds. They are also seen as tellers of secrets because, thanks to their intelligence, they can be trained to speak. This ability, used in Poe’s poem to great effect, casts the raven as the ultimate oracle.

Inspired by the evocative name of this dramatic colorway, Nevermore, and designed to emulate the shape of wings in flight, Corvida is my classic top-down short row crescent shawl worked in easy garter stitch and simple large-scale lace. Although there are beads added throughout the lace (350 6/0 4.00 mm seed beads), this pattern is easy enough even for a novice lace knitter because it includes only basic stitches, the wrong side lace rows are simply purled, and the beads are optional.

October 2, 2016 - pattern pdf update published correcting an error in the stitch count for Row 1 of the Bottom Border set up (page 2 under the photo). It should read …k24, place marker, etc, not …k23.
