There’s nothing cuter than tiny baby feet – so delicate, so small. And there’s nothing more special than a hand-knitted gift to welcome a new arrival. These socks are personal, thoughtful and completely unique – just like baby.

One of my favourite things about this pattern is that it’s perfect for using up leftovers from adult sock projects. Which means you can knit a pair for baby – and mummy, daddy, granny, grandad… or even treat yourself to a matching pair!

These socks are knitted in the round on double-pointed needles and the pattern includes two sizes – one for newborn and one for child. And here’s the magical bit: if you follow the second size but adjust the foot length (I’ve highlighted where to do this), the socks will fit children up to around 9 years old. A small project that brings a lot of joy!

CONSTRUCTION
Knitted on double pointed needles in the round in one piece from the cuff down.

TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, purl, double pointed needles, in the round, decreasing, picking up stitches, grafting stitches together. Optional but recommended to create the feeling of joy when joining your stitches: three needle cast off.

YARN
One* 50g ball of 4 ply weight yarn.
You may use oddments left over from knitting an adult sock as it takes about 10-15g for the first size and 18-22g for the second size when knitted as written in pattern. If making the foot length longer on the second size then more yarn is needed.

SUGGESTED KNITTING NEEDLES
Four double pointed 2.5mm knitting needles.

GAUGE (tension)
30 stitches and 42 rows to 10cm square over stocking stitch. I obtained this gauge with 2.5mm needles.
It is important to obtain gauge so do swatch and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.

SIZE AND FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
First size to fit 0-3 months (with foot length of 8.5cm)
Second size to fit from 9 months (with foot length of 12cm)
The second size is a magical size and the cast on amount will fit a child up to 9 years old by adjusting the foot length. I’ve highlighted where to do this in the pattern.
